To all those fantasy lovers- both readers and writers- I recommend checking out some books on help and tips about writing your story. I have read the book Writing Magic by Gail Carson Levine, author of many great books ncluding Ella Enchanted and Fairest. She describes and helps you write creative stories and gives warm ups to get you ready for your book. Guiding you through the writing process, Gail Carson Levine shows you how she wrote her book and urging you to find your inner story. It helps alot so I deeply recommend reading it, whether you are writing a book or not.

Empty Life

My life is empty, purpose gone. Why? Why drink from the new, pretty, shiny cup instead of me- your old, loyal glass. When all your other cups are in the dishwasher I was there for you. But now I stand alone, empty in the back of the cupboard. What to do now? My dreams were to be a model- on display in a department store where everyone can see me! I gave that all up just to be bought by you. I see how it is! You used me! I was just another trophy cup for your collection, used until a new one was found. I thought we had something special! Now I have decided on a new life- I want to be a coffee cup!

Paradise- Narrative Writing

At school today we had shortened classes, so our teacher gave us a narrative writing assignment. He handed out pictures which had a title, caption, and detailed painting/photo/drawing. Then we had an hour to write away- just one rule, the caption had to be your topic sentence. So here is mine…..

So its true, she thought, its really true.

The sun slowly rose up over the horizon, awaking from its long slumber. Rich green leaves rustled as a swift cool breeze blew through the trees. Shimmering water flowed silently yet elegantly through a narrow river. I looked at my surroundings and compared them to back home, in London. In no way were they similar. This place was magnificently too beautiful to describe. This was Paradise.

And there a top a smooth slick rock beside the river, stood my purpose of this journey- the Harp of Fortune, both of good and bad luck. So I plucked a string and wished for my sister Stephanie to get better, rid of the unknown sickness she had. But something caught my eye- a figure walking his dog. Strange- I hadn’t expected anyone else to be in Paradise, especially with a dog.

“Hello Lauren Smith, welcome,” the tall man said, his voice sounding like honey. I realized a shining aura shone off his fair skin.

“Ummm, hi?” I responded, remembering my mother telling me not to talk to strangers. But this was different, I felt like I knew this person, though I didn’t recognize his face. “Who are you?”

“I am surprised Lauren, don’t you know? I am the Keeper of the Mist, savior of life and leader of death. I am you father,” he said calmly, smiling happily at me, clearly amused.

I looked at him, confused. My father had disappeared 10 years ago when I was 3 and Stephanie was a newborn baby. Mother never told us about him. But I knew this was the truth. “Dad? But how?”

“I know it doesn’t make any sense, but what does? You made it here to the land of Paradise. Quite remarkable,” Father responded to me wistfully. I started to walk towards him and though this might be my true purpose, to find my dad.

“Welcome, Lauren,” he sighed, content. As I walked to him, I unknowingly dropped the fine string into the river, forgetting about Stephanie and the Harp.

Saxophone Festival

Today was a great learning experience, as well as a really fun day. My friend and I both play the alto saxophone, and in December already had decided to do a duet for a festival where we perform for a judge, get feedback, and try to improve our instrumental skill. So back before the holidays, my partner and I chose some pieces, one called Winter, another called Spring and the final one named Autumn which were all by the same composer, Bender. (I wonder why there is no Summer? We couldnt find one, maybe he was on vacation????). I think it went great! The judge helped us and gave us tips, even though the played oboe. We also stuck around a half an hour later, listening to the trio after us. All in all, today was really fun!

The Blind Side- Two Thumbs Up!

A heart-warming tale, The Blind Side is a wonderful story of love, family, and trust. This movie is based on a true story, of young Michael Oher and the Tuohy family and how both their lives are greatly changed. When young “Big Mike” moves to Wingate Christian School, he faces many troubles like grades, sports, and simply making friends. This rich area in Tennessee is so different from the city slums in which Michael is used to. When he meets the Tuohys his life changes- they give him a home where is loved and cared for. This gripping movie keeps your attention, and makes tears swell in your eyes.

Sandra Bullock amazes me and everyone who watched The Blind Side for her wonderful and well-portrayed role of Leigh Anne Tuohy. Her accent is as close as an actor can get. There are many hilarious moments and it is wonderful that this movie is moving and funny at the same time- which can be hard for a film to have both qualities.

All the other actors and actresses, such as Quinton Aaron who plays the football player and main character Michael Oher, where also perfect for the role they played both physically and emotionally. This movie will definitely be one of my all time favorites. Out of five stars, I give it all five stars, though it should get at least ten! I recommend this to people who love movies with real plot and emotion.

Oh- sunshine! Weather up in the Northwest is perfect for me! The sun is out and beaming, as if it is smiling on us! It is so nice, warm but not hot- with a cool breeze that is not cold. Funny it is February, not August. Even the weatherman agrees- showing happiness as he fortells the weather! Someone must of bribed the groundhog- it isn’t Winter! This is too lovely! Just hope it lasts!!!

P.S. Sorry Northeast- it is pummeling with snow on the other side of the USA.

New Year- of the Tiger!

All over China, businesses and shops are closed. People are at home for a vacation, and praying for good luck. You are looking at the result of February 14h- 2010′s Chinese Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival. This year, the year of the Tiger begins, ending the Year of the Ox. But this day varies, seeing as it is the second new moon after the Winter Solstice (which occuries around December 12th).

But how did this Chinese National Holiday begin? Well, according to legend, Buddha asked all the animals to come to meet with him. So 12 animals came- the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Buddha rewarded them by naming a year after each of them, and so the tradition began.

If you were born in 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986 or 1998, you were born in the year of the Tiger. Buddha said that whatever year you were born in, your personality reflects those of your animal. So if you were born in the year of the Tiger, you are said to be courageous, brave, unpredictable, and loving. You also get along with Horse and Dog personalities.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated and honored with fireworks and parades filled with dragon dances. Families gather to feast together and spend this highly important day with those who they love. Celebrations are amazing- with dancers, animals, and wonderful costumes. People dress as lions if they celebrate the lion festival, a popular way to put on a show. But the biggest celebration is the one that marks the end of the 15-day New Year season- the Lantern Festival. This is when thousands of lanterns of all sorts of colors and patterns shine everywhere around China.

Child Obesity

You are walking down the street with your friends, and you feel your stomach growling in hunger. A burger joint and a local salad bar catch your eye- a burger seems great but you could also have a tasty, healthy salad. Which one?

1/3 of children in the United States are considered overweight. Everyone knows obesity is a problem. But it is one thing acknowledging an issue, but it another to understand it. Being overweight comes with health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. But how can you keep yourself healthy and fit?

Exercise regulary- running is great but other activities like playing games, cycling, and dancing/skating count of course!
Watch the input, output- no you dont have to count the calories but be aware of about how much food you put in your body. Food+TV= overeating. When you eat and focus on a TV or computer you usually eat more.
Unsquare those eyes! Limit TV time. Did you know- when you watch TV your metabolism slows down. Now if you add high fat snacks that means disaster!

But dont think I am saying you have to be too skinny- that isnt good either- but it is good to watch your weight and keep a balanced healthy lifestyle!
